OIL USED NEWS - 2010 Updates and News
7-15-2010: From Lloyd’s of London - "Companies which are able to take advantage of this new [biofuel revolution] will increase both their resilience and competitiveness. Failure to do so could lead to expensive consequences". Via chathamhouse.org.uk
7-01-2010: A dutch chemical company DSM announced a new process for production of ethanol from agricultural waste with new enzymes and yeast. Most bio-fuel ethanol is currently produced from areas where food crops are grown. Ethanol produced from cellulose uses waste products such as wood chips and stalks. DSM claims that the new process increases the yield by a factor of two. Via DSM

6-7-2010: REPORT -Next-Generation Biofuels: Near-Term Challenges and Implications for Agriculture: This report assesses the short-term outlook for production of next-generation biofuels and the near-term challenges facing the sector. Next-generation U.S. biofuel capacity should reach about 88 million gallons in 2010 Via USDA
4-10-2010: Gasoline Rises to $2.90/Gal. Gasoline demand during the summer is estimated to rise 0.5 percent above a year earlier. Higher prices at the pump and the increase demand for summer fuel will also drive the price of biodiesel up to profitable production levels.
3-21-2010 Senate Approves Bill That Includes Biodiesel Credit. The biodiesel industry also received a boost last month when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency required that 1.15 billion gallons of the fuel must be used by the end of this year as part of a 2007 energy law. Via Business Week UPDATE 6_23_2010 - The bill was not passed.
Speacial Report: Oil Used for Biodiesel and Biofuel production from algae - While Jatropha feedstock for biodiesel takes two-three years for commercial harvest, algae starts yielding in less than one week. Thereafter, the algae oil can be harvested everyday. Algae oil can be converted to biodiesel and the remaining dry cake serves as an excellent source of protein for livestock. Algae production ponds can be created at wastewater treatment facilities to capture phosphorous and nitrogen.

January 15, 2010 - The world's Cheapest Car May Get Diesel Boost From Bosch: The Tata Nano, retailing for $2,160 (52 mpg city/61 mpg highway), is looking to improve less than a year after its introduction. The new Bosch Automotive Group engine was announced by Bosch's common-rail injection Bosch Chairman Dr. Bernd Bohr. The new diesel will likely be the world's smallest automotive diesel engine. The Tata will thus get even better mpg! Via Dailey Tech

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Wednesday announced the recipients of more than $80 million in government funding for biofuels research and development. The bulk of the funding, coming from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, went to algae research and development, while the rest went toward improving the country's ethanol infrastructure. About $44 million went to the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts (NAABB), an organization led by the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. Via Cnet

Diesel may be better fuel deal for U.S. Steven Dawson - What could be an important milestone in the U.S. auto industry took place in early December at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Amid the hype surrounding hybrids, plug-ins and fuel cells, a diesel car -- the Audi A3 TDI was named "Green Car of the Year." A week later, The Detroit News selected the same diesel as its "Car of the Year." Via DetNews

Novozymes, the world's biggest producer of industrial enzymes, has pinned big hopes on supplying enzymes to the biofuel industry, particularly for "second-generation" biofuels made from plant waste rather than food crops. They have been awarded a $28.4 million U.S. tax credit to support a new Nebraska plant to produce enzymes for the biofuel industry. Via Reuters
Update 10-25-2009 40,000 Gallons Motor Oil: Recycled...
Updated 12-23-2008 -
The majority of oil used in America can be bio diesel. Oil recycling equals greater energy independence, and it should be a top national priority. Biofuel is a form of diesel fuel that can be made from many food and non-food feedstocks (vegetable oils, animal fats, recycled restaurant greases, algae, [and pending]), . For anyone interested in building and operating a biodiesel production facility, the federal government now has a user-friendly manual. Competitive contracts for used cooking oil collection are now available for bulk used cooking oil buyers in most states.
The publication addresses wastewater permits and spill prevention under the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act, air operating permits under the Clean Air Act, as well as hazardous waste management under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Pollution Prevention Act, and Toxic Substances Control Act. The manual also covers federal renewable fuels standard (RFS) program registration, renewable identification number (RIN) registration, blending, exporting, record-keeping requirements and the management of crude glycerin. The publication includes examples for complying with environmental regulations and includes a directory of key federal and state officials.
